BT ISDN & PSTN switch-off · January 2027

Your Edinburgh business has until January 2027 to migrate from ISDN — here's what you need to do

BT is permanently switching off the UK's entire ISDN and PSTN network. When it goes, any business still relying on traditional landlines or an older phone system will lose service completely. There is no extension. There is no fallback. The deadline is fixed.

The good news: migrating to a modern cloud phone system is straightforward, affordable and often cheaper than what you're paying now — if you plan ahead.

Don't leave this too late. Engineer capacity and network migration slots fill up as the deadline approaches. Businesses that start now get a smoother transition, better choice and lower cost.

The deadline is January 2027

BT has confirmed this date will not move. Some exchanges are being switched off earlier as part of a rolling programme — your business may be affected sooner than you think.

Find out if your exchange is in an early switch-off area — contact us and we'll check for you.

Check your exposure

Is your business affected by the switch-off?

If any of the following apply to your business, you need to act before January 2027:

  • You have a traditional BT landline or business phone line
  • Your office uses an ISDN2 or ISDN30 connection
  • You have a PBX phone system connected to ISDN lines
  • Your broadband is delivered over a copper phone line (ADSL or FTTC)
  • You use a fax machine connected to a landline
  • Your alarm system, EPOS terminal or door entry system uses a phone line

If any of the above apply, you need a migration plan. The more items taht apply, the more complex your migration may be — and the earlier you should start.

The consequences

What actually happens on switch-off day if you haven't migrated

On the day BT switches off your exchange, ISDN and PSTN services stop. Not gradually. Not with a warning. They stop.

Here's what that means in practice:

Your phone lines go dead

Incoming calls won't connect. Outgoing calls won't work. Clients, suppliers and staff who call your office number will get nothing.

Your broadband may go down

If your internet connection is delivered over a copper phone line (ADSL or FTTC), it will also be affected.

Your phone system stops working

Any PBX or office phone system connected to ISDN lines will become inoperable.

Connected devices fail

Fax machines, alarm systems, EPOS terminals and door entry systems that rely on a phone line will stop functioning.

Your action plan

Three things to do before January 2027

Audit what you have

Find out exactly what needs migrating. Before you can plan a migration, you need to know what you're migrating from. That means identifying every phone line, every system and every device in your business that uses the PSTN or ISDN network — including things that aren't obviously phones, like alarms and card machines.

We do this audit for you, free of charge, as the first step in our migration process.

Choose the right replacement

Pick the cloud solution that fits your business. There's no single right answer — the best replacement depends on how your business uses its phones, how many lines you need, and how much you want to spend. The options are hosted VoIP, hosted PBX and SIP trunking. We'll explain the differences clearly and recommend the right one for your setup.

Plan and migrate before the rush

Get it done while you still have options. Migration capacity — engineers, installation slots, network porting windows — will tighten significantly as January 2027 approaches. Businesses that migrate now get first choice of provider, better pricing and a calmer transition. Those that wait until late 2026 will face higher costs, longer waits and fewer options.

ISDN switch-off — your questions answered

Can I just wait and see what happens in January 2027?

+

You could, but we'd strongly advise against it. Once the switch-off happens, your phone lines will stop working immediately and you'll need emergency installation of a VoIP system under time pressure. Emergency installs cost more, take longer and give you less choice of solution. Every business we've spoken to that waited longer than they should have regretted it.

My exchange hasn't been switched off yet — do I still need to worry?

+

Yes. BT's rolling switch-off programme means exchanges are being turned off in batches ahead of the January 2027 final deadline. Your exchange may be in an earlier wave. We can check your specific exchange status — just get in touch and we'll tell you where you stand.

How much does a VoIP migration cost?

+

It varies depending on the size and complexity of your current setup, how many lines you need and which solution is right for you. In most cases, businesses find their ongoing monthly costs are lower after migration than they were on ISDN — the hardware cost (if any) is typically offset within a year. We'll give you a clear, itemised quote before any work begins.

Will we lose service during the migration?

+

A well-planned migration has zero downtime. We sequence the transition so your new system is tested and ready before the old one is switched off, and number porting is timed to happen overnight or over a weekend wherever possible. Your team typically arrives on Monday morning and everything just works — on the same numbers, with better features.

We rent our office — is the migration our responsibility or the landlord's?

+

The phone lines serving your business are your responsibility as the tenant, not the landlord's — unless your lease specifies otherwise. Your landlord is responsible for any building-wide infrastructure (such as a shared ISDN system serving multiple tenants), but your individual lines and phone system are yours to migrate. If you're unsure, we can help you clarify what's covered before you commit to anything.
